Interviewing Skills Training

The first step in the competency interviewing skills training is comprehension of what an interview involves. There are two basic components to successful interviewing: listening skills and analytical/problem solving skills. This competency interviewing training helps develop listening skills through instruction in listening techniques and identifying key words and phrases that interviewers often use to get answers from their interviewees. The second step is to develop the ability to analyze and determine an individuals competencies based on their responses.

During the interview process candidates are asked to present their work history, strengths and weaknesses. Candidates then are asked to identify how these attributes are related to the job they are applying for. Successful interviewers identify problem areas and how they can be addressed during the interview process. The next step in the interview skills training process is to recognize appropriate behavior based interviewing skills. Candidates that demonstrate good interviewing skills and behaviors are more likely to be selected for the interview and given the opportunity for meaningful career advancement.

During the competency interviewing skills training managers education program addresses topics such as: What makes a good hiring decision? What are the characteristics of a successful hiring manager? How do you select and hire the most effective candidates? Why are some hiring managers more successful than others? The understanding of the interview process, which comes from both a theoretical and practical competency based interviewing skills course, will help managers make better hiring decisions and achieve higher levels of success with their staff and management team.

During the interview skills course, candidates are evaluated on both technical and analytical competencies. During the evaluation process, the following key skills are evaluated: listening skills, writing skills, communication skills, decision making skills, analytical thinking, initiative, creativity, organization skills, goal setting and motivation. Once the candidates have been assessed, it is a good idea to have them re-take the skills and perform a follow up competency analysis to verify areas still needed improvement.

The competency-based interviews are designed to train managers how to assess and communicate a candidate's competencies. It provides an excellent method for evaluating potential employees and developing a successful hiring and promoting strategy. The competency-based interview training program addresses how to use an applicant's strengths to identify her/his unique selling points (USP's) and determine where these strengths could be used to promote a person's career. In addition, it teaches managers how to properly communicate these USP's to a potential recruit in order to maximize the potential of that recruiting. Most of all, it helps managers create an overall recruiting package that will clearly showcase a person's strengths and selling points.
